Abstract

Wildlife habitat management within the forest environment requires the manipulation of tree cover, but this is usually too expensive solely for wildlife purposes. Forest management practices that enhance wood production, when correctly planned and executed, are potentially the most practical way to achieve wildlife habitat goals. A conceptual framework is needed that will enable the forest manager to: (1) consider the habitat needs of all vertebrate wildlife, (2) identify habitats that require special attention, and (3) focus management emphasis on desired species. As a group the forester, wildlife biologist, and landscape architect must strive in an imaginative manner to coordinate existing knowledge of forest wildlife needs and develop this information into management directives.
