Abstract
Cultural landscapes are a significant portion of this country's landscape heritage. As the federal government's principal agency charged with the preservation and management of historic and cultural resources, the National Park Service has implicit responsibility for a variety of cultural landscapes. This paper suggests a method for analyzing and evaluating those landscapes within the framework of existing NPS management policies. Of primary importance is the understanding that cultural landscapes exist within a larger natural setting, are part of that natural landscape, and embody many components. It is the interrelationship of these components, as a set, which defines and characterizes any single cultural landscape.
