Forest management practices that enhance wood production, when correctly planned and executed, are potentially the most practical way to achieve wildlife habitat goals. A conceptual framework is needed that will enable the forest manager to: (1) consider the habitat needs of all vertebrate wildlife, (2) identify habitats that require special attention, and (3) focus management emphasis on desired species. As a group the forester, wildlife biologist, and landscape architect must strive in an imaginative manner to coordinate existing knowledge of forest wildlife needs and develop this information into management directives.
