Three somewhat arbitrary time periods have been developed to discuss the state of technology within each epoch. The dilemma that has occurred between the abilities of systems and the requirements of the user groups are presented. The abilities of users are discussed by stratifying the groups relative to needs and requirements. These observations conclude with a discussion of some research areas that are important to the application of computer mapping in landscape architecture.
