YR 2002 UL http://lj.uwpress.org/content/21/1/116.abstract AB This article examines the life and professional work of little-known landscape architect Elizabeth J. Bullard of Bridgeport, Connecticut. With the abundance of recent writings on the early history of landscape architecture, including several excellent biographies of important practitioners, the author was intrigued by the possibility that there remained an individual, identified as the first woman to practice landscape architecture in this country, for whom no history had been written. In spite of a paucity of original sources and family history, the research undertaken has generated the following article. As with much historical research, the article raises many questions concerning Miss Bullard and the early years of the landscape architectural profession which remain to be answered by other researchers.
