AB  - The concept of long term monitoring as a means of developing a theoretical basis in landscape studies is presented. An annotated literature review is included, and definitions, purposes, and functions of monitoring are examined. The implication from this review leads to conclusions on the apparent necessity of long term monitoring to the landscape disciplines.
