As the federal government's principal agency charged with the preservation and management of historic and cultural resources, the National Park Service has implicit responsibility for a variety of cultural landscapes. This paper suggests a method for analyzing and evaluating those landscapes within the framework of existing NPS management policies. Of primary importance is the understanding that cultural landscapes exist within a larger natural setting, are part of that natural landscape, and embody many components. It is the interrelationship of these components, as a set, which defines and characterizes any single cultural landscape. ER -
