The term valence is used to describe the quantitative measure of a design component’s capacity to contribute to the production of ecosystem services, such as water regulation, air quality maintenance, and pollination. The selection and use of multivalent materials in design may have direct and measurable benefits on the production of ecosystem services in multifunctional landscapes. To this end, construction waste mitigation, stormwater mitigation, carbon sequestration, and plant stewardship were calculated using site-specific calculations or online calculators.
