Losing more land than all other states in the contiguous United States combined (Couvillion et al., 2017), Louisiana has become both a predictor of coastal ecosystem stress worldwide (Kent, 2012) and a laboratory for coastal restoration and climate adaptation efforts (Birch &amp; Carney, 2019). Coastal flooding will threaten 2.1 million people by 2050 in Louisiana alone (Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority of Louisiana, 2023). Where will they go? How can we ensure positive outcomes for both migrants and the communities they enter? While retreat has been the main adaptation strategy to escape rising seas, strategically designing receiving communities to absorb populations safely is another approach still in its infancy. Public agencies, designers, and planners must proactively plan for and strategically invest in receiving communities now to reduce environmental, economic, and social vulnerability. Identifying specific vulnerabilities in receiving communities can help direct federal funds to increase long‐term resilience for all residents. This study develops a methodology to identify potential receiving communities and projects needed to increase resilience using GIS data, census data, interviews, and a literature review; the example on which the study focuses is Coastal Louisiana. Key themes related to receiving communities that emerged include: (1) some communities are already better positioned than others to receive people; (2) the data suggests ways to improve resilience in potential receiving communities; (3) existing federal funding can be used to fill resilience gaps; and (4) planning for migration is critical to our long‐term resilience.</style></abstract></record></records></xml>
